Classic Cusco and Machu Picchu

Peru

Classic Cusco and Machu Picchu is a 6-day introduction to Peru's most iconic Inca heritage. Based in and around Cusco, the tour explores the Sacred Valley's Inca ruins and markets at Pisac and Ollantaytambo, before a scenic train journey delivers you to the breathtaking lost city of Machu Picchu. The trip rounds off with a guided tour of Cusco's magnificent temples, fortresses and colonial plazas. An optional extension into the Peruvian Amazon is also available.

Itinerary Details

Day 1

Arrival in Cusco

Reception and transfer to your hotel. Rest of the afternoon at leisure to acclimatise to the altitude.

Day 2

Cusco/Pisac/Ollantaytambo/Urubamba

Buffet breakfast. Drive up and hike to the splendid Inca ruins of Pisac at 3,250 m (10,654 ft) above sea level, a large complex of religious temples, housing areas, agricultural terraces, cliff-hanging paths and astronomic observatories. Afterwards, visit the village of Pisac to shop at the local handicraft market. Lunch at Tunupa del Valle Restaurant in Urubamba, followed by a tour of the town and fortress of Ollantaytambo, the last living Inca town. Accommodation in Valle Sagrado in Urubamba.

Day 3

Urubamba/Ollantaytambo/Machu Picchu

Buffet breakfast. Transfer to the Ollantaytambo station. A scenic, 1 hour 30 minute train trip through the Urubamba Valley, followed by a 30-minute bus ride up to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Guided tour through the ruins.

After lunch at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge, free afternoon to explore the ruins. Dinner and overnight at your Machu Picchu hotel.

Day 4

Machu Picchu/Ollantaytambo/Cusco

Buffet breakfast. Free morning to visit and enjoy the ancient citadel on your own. In the afternoon, return to Ollantaytambo by train and transfer to your hotel.

Day 5

Cusco

Buffet breakfast. In the morning, tour of the city including the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral and Santo Domingo Church (Koricancha), followed by a visit of the surrounding ruins of Puka Pukara, Kenko, Tampu Machay, and the renowned fortress and religious site of Sacsayhuaman, famous for its cosmic energy.

Afternoon at leisure.

Day 6

Departure from Cusco

Buffet breakfast. Transfer to the airport for your departing flight.

You can extend your stay in Peru beyond Machu Picchu and head to the Peruvian Amazon at Reserva Amazónica Inkaterra.
