Peru

Classic Peru is an 11-day journey through the very best of Peru's natural and cultural highlights. Beginning in the colonial White City of Arequipa, the tour descends into the dramatic Colca Canyon before reaching the shores of Lake Titicaca. The journey to Cusco is made in style aboard the Belmond Andean Explorer luxury sleeper train, followed by visits to the Sacred Valley, the fortress of Ollantaytambo, and the iconic lost city of Machu Picchu. An optional extension into the Peruvian Amazon is also available.

Itinerary Details

Day 1

Arrival in Arequipa

Arrival in Arequipa. Reception and transfer to Libertador Arequipa Hotel.

Day 2

Arequipa

Buffet breakfast. In the morning, tour of the White City, including the Plaza de Armas (main square), La Compañía Church and the famous Monastery of Santa Catalina. Then, visit its picturesque surroundings. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 3

Arequipa/Colca Canyon

Buffet breakfast. Departure to the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Misti and Chachani volcanoes. Then, go through the National Reserve of Aguada Blanca and Pampa Cañahuas, where vicuñas and possibly guanacos can be seen. Stop at a restaurant called Chinitos (4,000 m) to strech your legs. Continue to Pampa de Toccra, where you can see Peruvian camelids and some Andean birds. Afterwards, reach the Mirador de los Andes in Patapampa the highest point (4,900 m), from where you can appreciate the “Cordillera de Chila”, as well as the Mismi, Hualca Hualca, Sabancaya, Ampato, Chachani, Misti and the Ubinas volcanoes. Arrive at Chivay for lunch. Afterwards, transfer to Colca Lodge. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 4

Colca Canyon

Buffet breakfast. In the morning, stop at Cruz del Condor, sanctuary of the condors. Here appreciate the beauty of the canyon and observe the awesome flight of the condors. Visit the towns of Yanque and Maca towns and the Antahuilque and Peña Blanca scenic viewpoints. In the afternoon, enjoy a walk to Uyu Uyu (pre-Inca ruins). Enjoy the hotel’s hot thermal baths. Lunch and dinner at the lodge.

Day 5

Colca Canyon/Puno

Buffet breakfast. Departure to Puno appreciating on the way the splendid landscapes of the Cordillera de los Andes. Box lunch included. Arrival at Puno to meet with Andean Experience staff and continue to Titilaka, an attractive boutique lodge on the shore of Lake Titicaca, located in the secluded peninsula of Chucuito. Dinner included.

Day 6

Puno

Choose from a variety of tours and activities offered by the hotel, that range from contemplative to adventuresome, including: Kayak excursions, visit to the Taquile island and to the “totora” floating islands of the Uro Indians, highland treks and birdwatching, visit of colonial churches in Juli and Pomata, mountain biking, relaxation and meditation session at Playa Socca while admiring a stunning scenery. Lunch and dinner included.

Day 7

Puno/Cusipata

Buffet breakfast. Transfer to the station. Depart to Cusco by Belmond Andean Explorer, South America’s First Luxury Sleeper Train. Lunch on board. A stop at La Raya, which is a prime location for taking impressive photos. Cocktail and dinner on board. Arrive at Cusipata station. Overnight on board.

Day 8

Cusipata/Cusco/Pisac/Ollantaytambo/Urubamba

Breakfast. Morning, continue to Cusco. Upon arrival, reception to start a full day excursion to the Sacred Valley of the Incas including Pisac ruins and market. Visit the town and fortress of Ollantaytambo. Lunch at Tunupa del Valle Restaurant included. Continue to Urubamba and accommodation at Sol y Luna Hotel & Spa.

Day 9

Urubamba/Ollantaytambo/Machu Picchu/Ollantaytambo/Urubamba

Buffet breakfast. Transfer to Ollantaytambo station. Early departure by train to Machu Picchu. Arrive Aguas Calientes and afterwards, a 30-minute bus ride up to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. Guided tour through the ruins. Lunch at Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. In the afternoon, return to Ollantaytambo by train and return to the hotel in Urubamba.

Day 10

Urubamba/Cusco

Buffet breakfast. In the morning transfer to Cusco. Arrival and accommodation at the Marriott Hotel. In the afternoon, city tour of Cusco including the nearby ruins of Puka Pukara, Kenko, Tampu Machay and Sacsayhuaman.

Day 11

Departure from Cusco

Buffet breakfast. At the appropriate time transfer to the airport for your departing flight.

This itinerary is day of the week specific as the Belmond Andean Explorer train only operates from Puno to Cusco on Wednesdays. Should alternative transportation be chosen between Puno to Cusco, this itinerary can start and finish on any day of the week.
You can extend your stay in Peru beyond Machu Picchu and head to the Peruvian Amazon at Reserva Amazónica Inkaterra.
